Challenges with Admissions & Retention

Decisions to admit, discharge, or retain (ADR) residents in assisted living/senior living settings occur daily. Executive Directors, Wellness nurses, and DONs are left with difficult decisions regarding these issues. Is this potential resident appropriate for our setting? Do we need or have a Wanderguard or other security system in place for wanderers/those who are at risk of elopement? Can we manage a challenging behavior? Can we manage a wound that is present on admission? Do we have staff trained in the use of necessary supportive equipment? Can we provide turning and repositioning for a bed-bound resident? Do we have effective skin breakdown policies and procedures? Do we have sufficient staff to provide the level of supervision this resident requires? Do we have access to competent home health and Hospice partners to assist in managing the resident? What are the family’s expectations? Can we meet those? We will discuss those issues and suggested resolutions in this hour-long webinar.

Objectives:

• Knowing the importance of the written state regulations regarding admission, discharge, and retention criteria and how surveyors interpret those regulations.
• Identifying why the clinical person should have the final say (NOT ALWAYS POPULAR) as to the admission, discharge, or retention of residents based on assessment of the resident and staff.
• Knowing the staff’s ability to facilitate/provide care or limitations to their knowledge and abilities to provide safe and effective care for the resident.
• Attain the ability to present the ADR decisions to families.
