Nearly 25 states have legalized marijuana for medical use, with many dispensaries reporting more than 50% of their clientele is over the age of 65. Proponents tout the benefits of marijuana in a variety of conditions found in older adults including:
• Chronic pain
• Muscle spasticity
• Sleep disorders
• Appetite stimulation
But what does the evidence show, and how is it balanced against the side effect—such as dizziness and memory problems—that can be especially problematic in an older adult?
Please join Kari L. Franson, PharmD, PhD, BCPP, Associate Dean for Professional Education – University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences – as she discusses the true medical utility of marijuana with geriatric patients. Please forward to others within your facility that would be interested in this topic.
