Depression often occurs in our residents who suffer from other medical conditions and disabilities, but depression can happen at any care level. It can also happen simply because they make the move into our community which is a huge adjustment for anyone.
Older adults are at risk of misdiagnosis and lack of treatment because some of their symptoms can mimic normal age-related issues. Symptoms can also be mistakenly attributed to other illnesses, medications, or life changes.
If they have been experiencing those feeling prior to admission, prior to moving in, because they are having a difficult time coming to terms with losses, aging, or dementia, depression may present even stronger.
Healthcare professionals should keep in mind that it is relatively normal to become overwhelmed and become emotional during a major loss, or a life change. Depression has a profound negative effect on our resident’s quality of life, and physical health. Identifying and treating it requires an integrated team approach that alleviates social isolation and environmental stressors. Depression is NOT a normal part of growing old.
